Dalton public-works team honored for Walnut North drainage improvements

City of Dalton public-works staff and design partner Arcadis received a state-level award Aug. 4 for the Walnut North Drainage Improvements Project, which the city described as a four-phase effort to reduce flooding in the Walnut North drainage area, Murray Hill subdivision and near West Hill Cemetery. The Georgia chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) selected Dalton for the Project of the Year in the small city/rural community category and in the $1 million–$5 million project-value range.
City staff said three of the four phases have been completed and the final phase is under active construction. The project uses green-infrastructure elements and aimed to add capacity and redundancy to the local drainage system; the city said the work was identified in its 21st Century stormwater master plan developed with Arcadis. Richard Grewell of Arcadis attended the meeting; Jackson Shepherd was identified by city staff as the project manager on the work. Chad Townsend, who was introduced during the recognition, credited the council’s support and the Arcadis team for delivering the project within a roughly two-and-a-half-year timeline.
Municipal staff said the project has prompted other invitations: Georgia Municipal Association asked Dalton to advise other cities on stormwater planning, and Dalton officials have been invited to present nationally on their experience. The council recognized the public-works team and asked members to join staff at the front for a photo; no budget or contract adjustments were proposed or acted on at the meeting.
