Superintendent lays out 'EPIC' priorities, cites LCAP praise and summer gains

Superintendent Dr. Farkas told the Central Union High School District Board of Trustees on Aug. 5 that the district theme for the 2025‑26 school year is “strength in unity” and outlined priorities under an EPIC framework designed to focus instructional engagement, professional learning, inclusion and school culture.
Dr. Farkas said the County Office of Education had judged the district’s Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) “exemplary,” and he thanked assistant superintendent Petter and site leaders for summer efforts. He noted the summer program drew about 800 students, saying “800 students completed one or more courses in the summer session” in a district of roughly 4,000 students.
The EPIC priorities he described are: engaging and strategic instruction; professional learning communities and data‑driven tweaks to instruction; inclusion with expanded co‑teaching and access for students with disabilities; and strengthening campus culture, pride and communication. He said the district plans to expand co‑teaching this year but acknowledged the need for better organization and communication to scale the effort.
Dr. Farkas also thanked staff who handled a large volume of transfer requests over July and recognized Carol Taylor and summer school principal Miss Martinez for their roles in onboarding students and delivering summer courses. He said staff and facility preparation must continue this week as staff welcome events and the first week of classes approach.
The superintendent framed the EPIC approach as an operational guide for daily interactions and instruction rather than a single program change. He told trustees, “If it doesn't fall under this, what are we talking about?” and emphasized the role of trust, listening and coaching in improving outcomes.
