Butte — The Historic Preservation Commission approved a sign design for a new tenant at 53 East Park Street, where a suspended, internally lit sign will be installed from the building’s balcony.
Contractor John Whitesell described the sign as “18 inches wide, 5 foot 6 tall,” with high‑density foam letters that will be painted white, fitted with reflective beading, and backlit to create a halo effect. Whitesell said the sign background will use “the black smalt from the Anaconda pile” and that LED lighting will be installed inside the panel to illuminate the lettering.
Whitesell explained installation will use angle iron and top suspension from the balcony to carry weight and that the sign will be inset into the frame. The commission discussed site history and previous uses for the space; Whitesell noted an historical photo showing a former driveway and possible underground parking at that location.
A commissioner moved to approve the tattoo sign at 53 East Park; the motion was seconded and the commission voted to approve the design. No conditions beyond the presented design were recorded at the meeting.
