Butte — The Historic Preservation Commission voted to approve a design review Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) for window restoration at the Wilhelm Flower Shop, 135 West Broadway.
Kate, the preservation staff member who presented the application, said the project will use URA funds to repair and restore 14 upper‑story wood window sashes and replace only the glass panels and weatherproofing rather than replace the original sashes. Kate said the building “has that great corbeling and the stonework around the windows,” and that the principal scope at this time is window glass replacement and interior cleanup; brick repairs will follow as a separate project.
Commissioner Russell O'Leary moved to approve the design review COA “as it's been presented to us.” Cameron Beardsley seconded the motion; the commission voted aye and the COA carried.
During discussion contractors and commissioners described appropriate brick restoration techniques for later work — repointing deteriorated masonry with a lime‑rich mortar and light chemical cleaning — and staff said future brick repairs and pigeon mitigation are planned. Diane Hall, the owner/applicant, confirmed the upper‑story work is the “main thrust of this project.”
No further action was required at this meeting; staff will track follow‑up applications for exterior masonry work and coordinate the project through URA and building code processes.
