Veterans committee schedules memorial events, defers approval of older minutes

A veterans committee meeting on announcements confirmed planning for several upcoming memorial events and decided to defer action on nearly year-old minutes until the November agenda. Committee members also asked event organizers to contact staff in advance to coordinate support.
The committee confirmed that the VFW will handle Item A and that the American Legion will handle the POW/MIA remembrance "on the nineteenth," and noted a Gold Star service set for Sept. 28 at 11 a.m. "That should be a combined service," a committee member said. Steven Betancourt introduced himself to the group as an attendee.
The meeting included a short discussion about approving past minutes. A staff member told the committee the packet did not include older minutes because the set was nearly a year old and the quorum present may not have been part of those meetings: "I just didn't wanna put anything out there that was so old that you guys may not have even been a part of. So, I wanna kinda regroup and see how we handle those." The chair agreed to add the minutes to the November agenda for action.
Members discussed logistics for the Gold Star service and POW/MIA remembrance. A committee member said organizers should reach out at least a couple of weeks ahead so staff can be prepared. The Gold Star service location was identified as Whiteview Monuments. On Dec. 13 the committee will again participate in Reads Across America, with a cemetery laying at 10:30 a.m. followed by noon ceremonies; organizers said volunteers will cover multiple county cemeteries including locations in Vero, Winter Beach, Sebastian and West Balbasa.
Committee members also noted the Marine Corps birthday on Nov. 3; the speaker said there would be events in Barefoot Bay and in Orlando. The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn that was seconded and carried.
Discussion was limited and no formal votes on policy or budget items were recorded.
