City debriefs Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup; site organizers estimate about 150 pounds of debris collected

City staff briefed the Natural Resource Board on Aug. 5 about the Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup and said Sebastian’s site had robust volunteer turnout and notable reductions in observed litter compared with previous years.
Felicia Gordian, staff supporting the Natural Resource Board, said the Sebastian cleanup site had more than 30 in-person participants and about eight virtual participants; site organizers estimated roughly 150 pounds of debris collected. "At our site alone, we have had over 30 in person participants...we were estimating that we had over a 150 pounds collected of debris," Gordian said.
Board members who participated said they noticed less trash than in prior years. One board member suggested mandatory residential garbage pickup that was introduced recently might be reducing the amount of litter placed in public receptacles or dumped near launch sites; Gordian and others said outreach such as the Leave No Trace campaign at boating areas could also be contributing to reduced debris.
Gordian said she expected additional, more detailed statistics from the Marine Industries Association of the Treasure Coast in the coming week and will share a fuller debrief when those numbers are available. Board members thanked volunteers and local partner organizations, including the Sebastian Elks Club, which Gordian said provided substantial support at the site.
The briefing was informational; the board did not take formal action. Clarifying details provided at the meeting included participant counts (30+ in-person; 8 virtual), a preliminary debris weight estimate (~150 pounds) and plans for staff to distribute full cleanup statistics after receiving the Marine Industries Association’s report.
