HDC approves Newport Blue front door at 43 Orange Street; window sashes to be white

The Historic District Commission approved a color change at 43 Orange Street on Aug. 5, allowing the front door to be painted a high‑gloss Newport Blue while directing the applicant to paint window sashes and storm frames white instead of the darker blue shown on the property.
Tory (applicant) told the commission she had discussed paint selection with staff and understood the door color used in the inspiration area to be Newport Blue; she presented samples of the blue in both semi‑gloss and full gloss. "What she is proposing is to change the front door to a fine paints of Europe, high gloss Newport blue," Tory said.
Advisory comments from commissioners and the preservation planner emphasized traditional sash and storm colors in the Old North Wharf/Orange Street area: dark greens, blacks or white for sashes and trim. "My perception of that area of town ... is none of the houses have blue sash," Mickey Rowland said. Commissioners agreed the blue door is acceptable but that blue sashes were not consistent with the local streetscape.
The motion passed: the front door color in Newport Blue was approved; the sash/storm frames must be returned to white. The commission asked staff to ensure the application form is updated to show the approved paint scheme before permits are issued.
Next steps: applicant to update the application and have staff confirm final paint choices for the door and windows prior to painting.
