Deputy Chief Golden Bear of the Battle Creek Fire Protection District invited the commissioners to an outdoor demonstration showing the difference between a sprinklered structure and one without sprinklers.
Golden Bear said the department arranged with the Fire Marshal Association and the Fire Sprinkler Coalition to bring a prop that will let commissioners “see what a fire looks like” under sprinklered and non-sprinklered conditions. He said the demonstration will compare fire growth and discuss impacts on builders, homeowners and firefighters, using a Springfield Building mock-up for side-by-side comparison.
“...we made some arrangements through the Fire Marshal Association and as well as the Fire Sprinkler Coalition to get a prop up here so you guys can see what a fire looks like under those conditions, sprinkler condition and 1 that does not,” Golden Bear said. He invited the commissioners to go outside for an approximately 15-minute presentation and live ignition intended to illustrate life-safety outcomes.
Golden Bear framed the demonstration as related to a sprinkler ordinance the jurisdiction adopted “about a year ago” and said the presentation would include facts and fire growth modeling. The transcript contains no formal vote or staff assignment tied to the invitation; it is recorded as an offer for commissioners to attend a demonstration.
