Council approves $50,692 purchase of influent pump for wastewater treatment plant

The Committee of the Whole on Aug. 5 authorized staff to purchase a new influent pump for the wastewater treatment plant at a cost of $50,692 plus freight and installation. Public Works Director Jim Rosvit said the plant has four influent pumps that move wastewater into the treatment facility; wear rings on those pumps have been adjusted over time and are now at the limit of effective adjustment.
Rosvit said the preferred approach is to keep a fifth pump on hand so the city can rotate pumps for scheduled rebuilds rather than operate with reduced capacity while a pump is out of service. He said rebuild estimates for existing pumps average approximately $32,119 but are subject to change pending a shop inspection.
Councilor Paulson and Councilor Johnson moved and seconded the purchase; the committee approved the purchase by voice vote. The purchase will be paid from the sanitary‑sewer subfund (wastewater treatment fund), and councilors noted the fund’s current repair and maintenance balances could cover the expense. Staff said they will send the removed pump to a service shop for inspection and rebuild estimate, and they will continue a planned program of rotating pumps for maintenance to reduce operational risk.
