Council finds petition sufficient and orders initial improvements for Alley Block 182 north of Center Street

The New Ulm City Council opened a public hearing Tuesday on a petition for initial alley improvements in Alley Block 182 north of Center Street and found the petition sufficient to proceed.
City engineering staff reported the petition, originally requested in September 2021 and filed in the city engineer—s office in June, asks for grading, aggregate-based surfacing, concrete driveway approaches, storm sewer if needed, miscellaneous removals and restoration to construct a residential pavement section in the alley.
Staff said the total frontage adjacent to the alley is 700 lineal feet and property owners representing 400 lineal feet signed the petition, yielding 57.14 percent in favor by frontage. Twelve parcels abut the alley and six parcel owners signed, a 50 percent parcel majority. City practice requires not less than 35 percent in frontage for such improvements.
With no public comments at the hearing, the council adopted a resolution finding the petition sufficient, closed the public hearing, ordered the initial alley improvements for Alley Block 182 north of Center Street, and authorized the city engineer to prepare project plans and specifications for inclusion in the 2026 capital improvement plan. Director Jorgensen called the roll; Councilors Christian, Schmitz, Mack and Womack voted yes.
