Council accepts FAA and IIJA grants for airport apron expansion and approves fuel-system engineering task order

The New Ulm City Council on Tuesday accepted two federal grant offers to expand the apron and perform pavement maintenance at the New Ulm Municipal Airport and approved a professional services task order to advance the airport—s fuel system replacement.
City staff reported the total project cost is $996,000. The project is funded by two separate federal grantsthe FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and an Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG)that together will cover 95% of the project. Staff estimated the city—s share at about $25,000.
Council also approved task order number 2025-02 to add engineering services from Mead & Hunt for the aircraft fuel system replacement. Staff said the original bids required the work to be split into two phases: site civil work (access road and pads for new tanks) and the fuel system components, with the rebidding and construction administration for the fuel system included in the task order. The task order amount approved was $91,542, and the motion specified it was contingent on the city receiving the MnDOT grant to cover the engineering work.
MR Paving & Excavating had been the apparent low bidder for the combined work when bids opened in March, staff said, but the project was split because of bid pricing; grants are needed to proceed with the full scope. Council moved and approved resolutions to accept AIP project number 3-27-0070-024-2025 and AIG project number 3-27-0070-023-2025 and authorized city officials to execute the grant offers and amendments. Director Jorgensen called the roll; Councilors Christian, Schmitz, Mack and Womack voted yes on both grant acceptances and the task order motion carried.
