Ambria Hightower, a North College Hill resident, asked city council to pursue an honorary street name for Isaac Matthew Moore, a 17-year-old who was killed in 2019 at Crutchfield Park. Hightower said she sought signage at both ends of the street and that Springfield Township — which shares jurisdiction on parts of the route — created and used a new application process and then denied her request without consulting her.
“Isaac was a good kid in a terrible situation,” Hightower said during public comment. “He was a basketball player … He was 17. He's no different from a child that died from a car accident.” Hightower said she and supporters collected more than 450 signatures and that Springfield Township denied the application despite what she called clear qualifications.
Council President directed that Hightower’s request be referred to the Public Safety Committee at the committee’s next meeting. Council Member Underwood acknowledged the referral and said the committee will discuss the request and the interjurisdictional process for honorary street names.
Hightower also asked the council to consider plaques or benches if signage is not possible, and she asked the city to coordinate with Springfield Township and other relevant agencies to resolve application and jurisdiction questions.
Next steps: Council referred Hightower’s request to the Public Safety Committee for review and asked staff to include the item on the committee agenda.
