Veterans service office asks for third service officer as benefit payments to county veterans jump

Vigo County veterans service staff asked the committee to add a third Veteran Service Officer (VSO) and to convert the department's part-time administrative assistant to full time.
Speakers told the committee that VA compensation and pension payments to county veterans totaled roughly $26 million over a previous five-year period and had risen to approximately $38 million in 2024. They said an increased number of younger veterans and higher incoming benefit payments have increased demand for claims, appeals and care-in-the-community coordination.
Veterans staff argued that a third VSO would allow more timely service, reduce backlog and enable outreach at the VA clinic and other community sites. They estimated a full VSO position (salary plus benefits) in the mid-$30,000s to low-$40,000s range depending on county pay scale and asked the county to consider one identified internal candidate for the role.
Committee members thanked staff and asked for formal costings and a plan to integrate an additional VSO into clinic-based outreach and county offices. No formal action was taken; staff will return with precise salary and benefit amounts for the committee's next review.
