The Washington Metro Rail Safety Commission told commissioners on Aug. 19, 2025, that it has concurred with MetroRail's activation of automatic train operation (ATO) systemwide but remains closely monitoring station overruns and several safety-certification projects.
WMSC staff reported that the commission concurred on May 20, 2025, to use ATO in passenger service on the green and yellow lines and on June 12, 2025, to expand ATO to the blue, orange and silver lines; ATO passenger service began on June 15, 2025 for the blue, orange and silver lines. The commission said monitoring focuses on station-stop accuracy, trends, and the durability of mitigations WMATA has implemented.
