Wayne County commissioners approved on Aug. 5 a motion to abandon county/state maintenance of McKeel Oil Company Road (SR 1170) at the request of a Pentecostal church that owns land on both sides of the roadway and intends to expand across the alignment.
County staff said the church requested the change and that the North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) has approved the abandonment. The roadway is a dead‑end and the church owns the adjoining parcels; staff said all paperwork is complete. Commissioners asked a few clarifying questions about access and confirmed the relocation will not affect other properties because the church controls both sides of the road.
The board approved the motion to remove the road from the maintenance system as presented.
