District awaiting federal education funding details as after-school plans for Centennial remain priority

Superintendent Steve Unowski updated the Richfield School Board on the status of federal education funds that the district expects to support after-school programming, but said state-level allocations and district budget entries had not yet been finalized.
“We have not full agreement yet from MDE or they have not loaded up all of the budgets yet to tell us how many of those dollars and what exactly has been released,” Unowski said. He said the district’s top priority is launching after-school programming at Centennial, followed by Richfield Middle School, and that the administration is working to ensure programming is available whether or not federal funds fully materialize.
Unowski reminded trustees that other elementary sites currently receive paid childcare through a partner (Fun Club) and that Centennial’s services had been primarily sustained in past years by a 21st Century grant. The superintendent said the board should expect an update at the Aug. 18 meeting, when administration hopes to have clearer figures from federal and state sources.
No formal action was taken; administration pledged to return with specifics once funding details and budget entries are available.
