Jessica Skidern, a county staff member presenting the items, described the Silver Spurs request as support for 30 young people and eight leaders who act as "great ambassadors for Taos County." She told commissioners the funding would come from the promotional lodgers-tax bucket and is similar in purpose to previous event sponsorships.
On the Rio Grande Sky Fiesta sponsorship, Skidern said the county would be a "Vista sponsor" and receive promotional placement that highlights Taos County. Commissioners voiced general support; a roll-call vote approved both sponsorships. Meeting minutes show one abstention on the Silver Spurs vote was recorded by a commissioner with a close tie to the group.
What this means: Both awards come from the promotional lodgers-tax funding stream and are intended to increase outside promotion of Taos County and support youth and heritage events. County staff will process funding and ensure promotional placements described in the sponsorship materials.
