Board delays reductions to municipal service levels for 2026; seeks structured review for future budgets

The Village Board on Monday voted to defer any formal reductions to departmental service levels in the 2026 budget cycle, deciding that a broad review of service levels is a large initiative that cannot be implemented in time for next year’s budget.

Background: Trustees and staff reviewed department-level analyses, past studies and requests for additional benchmarking. Several trustees said they had asked department heads to propose multiple options for cost reductions, but the responses did not produce ready-to-implement alternatives in the time available.

Trustee concerns and next steps: Trustee Christine Stokerbrand and others said the process must be stronger next year: departments should present concrete options and trade-offs — for example, three different reduction packages — so the board can make informed choices. Trustee Kudo asked for further study of the Department of Public Works’ staffing and operations to determine whether existing services are efficient and whether facility changes could yield savings.

Board action: The motion to defer reductions in service levels for 2026 passed 5–1. Trustees asked staff to design a clear process for evaluating service-level changes for future budgets and to present benchmarking and department-level options for consideration in subsequent budget cycles.
