Muscatine County supervisors discussed several resident concerns about limited options for recycling and disposing of materials such as cardboard, paints, tires and appliances during the Aug. 4 meeting.
A board member reported a caller who said county residents had no place to take cardboard for recycling and urged the county to seek solutions. Members noted the city of Muscatine charges fees for some items and provides a compost facility that uses a sticker system for city residents. Board members suggested reaching out to the city to explore whether county residents could purchase services or if a fee-for-service arrangement could be arranged.
Members said prior changes in recycling services led to increased roadside dumping and that county residents have in the past used neighboring counties' facilities. The board agreed to contact the city mayor to discuss options and noted that some rural areas may already use alternative county or neighboring-county services. No new county program or funding was approved; staff were asked to open discussions with the city.
