Council approves permits, street closures for community events including Veterans Day parade

The City of Jasper City Council approved permits and street closures for three community events during its meeting, including the Veterans Day parade set for the first Saturday in November. Kelly Barnes, a city staff member, presented the requests, saying, "It's the unity in the community for Saturday, August 9... at AP Howard Park" and that the event "starts at 5PM, lasts till 9PM." Barnes also described a POW-MIA ceremony requested by the Jasper VFW for Sept. 19 from 5 to 6 p.m., and the Veterans Day parade requested by the Jasper VFW for Nov. 1. The council agreed to the requested parade route and street closures. Barnes said the Veterans Day parade will follow the usual route from the old high school down Nineteenth Street, turning right on Sixth Avenue, right on Eighteenth Street and back to the old high school parking lot, and that the organizers "have requested that blockage to begin at TR Simmons Elementary at 09:30AM and all along the parade route." She also told the council a certificate of liability insurance had been obtained for that parade. Council members moved and seconded approval after Barnes' presentation; the motions carried unanimously. The approvals included the event dates, the requested temporary street closures along the parade route and the city's acceptance of the certificate of insurance for the Veterans Day parade. No ordinance or fee change was adopted; the council recorded the decisions by voice vote. The city did not provide additional staffing or budget details during the discussion. Organizers and staff will follow ordinary permitting procedures for final logistics and barricade placement.
