The Des Moines City Council on Aug. 4 approved a 2080 agreement with the Iowa State Fair Authority to construct a sidewalk along East 30th Street from East University Avenue to East Grand Avenue.
A council member said the Fairgrounds Neighborhood Association had prioritized the sidewalk and thanked the Fair Board and staff for advancing the project. "This is gonna be much safer for everyone to... negotiate around the fair," the council member said, and noted temporary lights at Maple to improve access.
The council moved and seconded approval of the 2080 agreement (Council Communication 25-302); the roll-call vote was 7-0 in favor.
The action authorizes the agreement under the city's 2080 process; it does not itself construct the sidewalk. The council recorded the measure as approved and thanked engineering staff and the Fair Board for collaboration. The council did not identify specific construction start dates or funding breakdown in the public discussion at the meeting: those details will be set by the agreement and project management staff.
