The Haslet City Council on Aug. 4 established a proposed tax rate for fiscal year 2025–26 at $0.31545 per $100 of assessed value and set a public hearing on the tax rate for Aug. 18.
Staff provided the tax-rate calculation worksheet and said the figure is a proposed rate; the actual rate will be adopted at a later meeting after required public notices and the council’s budget adoption. City staff member Marcy Lamb explained that the proposed rate follows the calculations in the packet and that the council’s action on Aug. 4 only sets the rate for public hearing and required notices.
Councilmembers and staff also discussed scheduling for the FY25‑26 budget. The council had a budget workshop the prior Saturday and set the schedule to adopt the budget later in August. Several council members noted that changes to staffing or a new administrator (an item the council recalled earlier at this meeting) would require budget adjustments before final adoption.
The council’s motion established the proposed tax rate and scheduled the public hearing for Aug. 18; the measure passed unanimously.
Why it matters: Setting a proposed tax rate begins the statutory process that leads to adoption of the budget and final tax rate. The public hearing gives residents an opportunity to comment before the council’s final vote.
