Council tables master plan discussion for Nance and Firehouse athletic fields; $300,000 in budget earmarked

Councilmembers discussed a proposed master plan for upgrades and renovations at Nance Fields and Firehouse Fields on Aug. 4 but voted to table the item for a future agenda while staff prepares background materials.

Councilmember James Gilbert introduced the item, emphasizing the need to upgrade softball and baseball fields, add parking and consider adding multi-sport fields to serve youth leagues and attract tournaments. Councilmembers and speakers said the current facilities are worn, lack accessible routes and have insufficient parking; some suggested dedicating Nance for softball and Firehouse for baseball and added multiuse fields for football and soccer.

At a budget workshop earlier in the week councilmembers had placed a $300,000 line for a master park plan in the draft budget; staff confirmed the amount and said the scope could cover the full 77–78 acres the city now owns near the fire station. Several council members and residents urged the plan include accessibility and phased construction so short-term needs can be addressed while a long-range plan is developed.

After discussion, a councilmember moved to table the item to allow staff to bring back prior plans, clarify scope and present a formal master-plan proposal. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

Why it matters: The city is growing and municipal leaders said improved athletic facilities would support youth sports, increase tournament revenue and improve quality of life. Residents pressed for inclusive planning, better parking and protections for existing fields while the city considers larger investments.

What comes next: Staff will assemble prior plans, scope a master plan for Nance and Firehouse fields and return with a recommendation and cost estimates; council has budgeted funds in the draft FY25‑26 budget for a park master plan.
