Joseph R. DeMar, who identified himself as co‑chair of the Wood County Green Party and a resident of 517 South Main, urged the council during the public comment period to design any new fire stations to function as resilient, energy‑independent facilities.
"If we act now and design them with solar panels, with geothermal heating, and with backup batteries of sufficient size to provide power for the whole fire station in case of a long outage," DeMar said, "I think it will be much easier to convince the people of Bowling Green to accept the new charge." He framed the recommendation as both a cost and resiliency strategy and cited recent extreme weather as context for planning for longer outages.
DeMar also referenced a recently constructed school, saying its geothermal systems will save millions of dollars; he used that example to argue building resilient infrastructure now can lower long‑term operating costs. His remarks were delivered as public comment; no council action or formal direction to staff was recorded during the meeting in response to his suggestions.
