Board approves accessibility upgrades to landmark John Humphrey House

The Orland Park Village Board approved a certificate of appropriateness for accessibility and maintenance improvements at the John Humphrey House, a landmark structure at 9830 W. 140th Place. Trustee Lawler moved approval of plan commission recommended action for case No. 2025-0553; the motion passed by roll call.
Staff said the village owns the property and the Department of Recreation and Parks manages it. The proposed work includes widening door openings for accessibility, replacing some walks, restriping parking, and installing a new air conditioning condenser. Staff said the outward style of the door will remain the same but the openings will be widened to meet federal and state accessibility standards for public buildings.
Trustee Healy asked whether widening the doors would affect the house’s historic character; staff replied that the door style will be preserved and that accessibility upgrades are common and necessary for public buildings, including to allow wheelchairs, walkers or stretchers to access the building.
The plan commission recommended approval unanimously, and trustees approved the certificate of appropriateness. The village manager was authorized to proceed with implementation subject to any required reviews.
