Norfolk County declares surplus "junk" assets, directs removal and disposal

The Norfolk County Commission on July 30 voted to declare a list of county assets surplus and to clear several items as junk, instructing staff to dispose of or remove them. Purchasing Director Maureen McKeown presented the list, which she said primarily comprised items from the county golf course and one piece from the engineering department.
"I've asked the various departments to let us know for insurance reasons and others if they have surplus items to dispose of," McKeown told the commission. She said items under $10,000 follow a streamlined process but that she preferred an official vote to create a public record of the surplus declaration. Commissioners discussed whether towns or nonprofits could claim usable items and noted some items are too degraded to be useful.
Commissioners singled out an old truck at the golf course described as heavily deteriorated and overgrown; staff said it may have to be scrapped and that removal could require payment to a junk hauler. The commission approved the surplus declaration and directed purchasing to make the items available to member towns and nonprofits where feasible, then dispose of or scrap remaining items and notify the county's insurance carrier that the assets no longer hold value.
The motion included items declared surplus by the Waltham Educational Facility and one from the Norfolk County engineering department; staff said they would publish a master list and manage offers from towns or nonprofits before scheduling removal.
