Norfolk County approves $1,000 signing bonus for Registry of Deeds union staff

The Norfolk County Commission on July 30 voted to authorize $1,000 one-time signing bonuses for 25 members of the Registry of Deeds union, a total of $25,000 charged to the FY26 registry of deeds salary line. Director John Cronin asked the commission to approve the payment after the union contract was ratified earlier in July.
"For your attention today, I would like to address the bonus payment due to the registry of deeds union employees," Director John Cronin told commissioners. He said the registry contract had been ratified on July 2 and that the county is moving "as quickly and efficiently as we can to see to it that the economic payments associated with that contract are fulfilled."
Cronin said the request covers 25 members and that the payment would be made from the FY26 registry salary line noted in the packet. Commissioners discussed the motion and confirmed the payment amount as $1,000 per eligible employee before taking a roll-call vote. The motion carried; Commissioner Collins and Chairman Shea were recorded as voting yes.
The director said additional contract-related economic items — including cost-of-living adjustments and longevity payments — will be brought to the commission for consideration at a later meeting. Cronin also said counsel had reviewed the contract-related payment authority and provided guidance included in the meeting packet.
The commission recorded the approval and directed staff to process the one-time signing bonus to the employees listed in the attached roster.
