Council approves Shears Ace mural and facade grants, and a facade grant for Give Me Chocolate

The Oak Park City Council on Tuesday approved a mural for Shears Ace Hardware at 8601 West Nine Mile and authorized Corridor Improvement Authority (CIA) facade grants for that business and for Give Me Chocolate.
Michelle Bishop, representing the Corridor Improvement Authority, described the mural as approximately 25 by 16 feet on the east side of the Shears Ace building and said the design pays tribute to Oak Park landmarks such as the train and oak trees. The mural has been reviewed by the Mural Review Board and approved by the CIA.
“We're super excited, and this is project 1 of 2,” Bishop said. She noted the selected artist, Wendy Papico, has completed dozens of murals around Metro Detroit.
Councilmember comments were uniformly positive. The council approved the mural and then approved a CIA facade grant program match (50% up to $5,000) for the project; staff said the mural cost is $10,000 and the CIA approved a $5,000 matching grant. The vote was unanimous.
The council also approved the CIA's tenth and final facade grant for the fiscal year: a $2,341.24 grant for Give Me Chocolate at 22133 Coolidge Highway to cover repainting and landscaping. Michelle Bishop said the business plans to use drought-resistant plantings and will maintain landscaping.
Councilmembers and the mayor noted the mural and facade work contribute to the 9 Mile corridor improvements and community vibrancy.
