Library seeks children's-area remodel, landscaping and ceiling work as part of capital wish list

Rachel (library director) told commissioners the library has completed a major infrastructure project and is proposing a set of remaining improvements to carry the building forward for decades. The library's priority, she said, is a remodel of the children's area that would make programming space more flexible and replace much of the original shelving and furniture.

"The biggest thing was, remodel the children's area, essentially, just being able to extend, some of the work that we've done," Rachel said, explaining the need for new furniture, movable shelving and design services to reorganize space for infant-through-12 programming.

Other requests included improved landscaping on the north and west sides to control snowmelt runoff onto sidewalks, and addressing staff-area ceilings and acoustic finishes that the director described as deteriorated and unpleasant. Rachel said the library has estimates and has spoken to contractors; she proposed design fees to scope the children's remodel and cited a likely future roofing need in roughly 8'10 years.

Finance and process issues were discussed: county staff reminded the director that previously allocated library roof funds must be drawn down before invoicing a larger infrastructure grant for roof work, and that grant invoicing steps must follow the accounting rules to avoid supplanting county funds with grant funds. No final funding decision was made; commissioners asked staff to ensure the library's existing restricted roof account is used first when appropriate and to include the library projects in the SPET prioritization exercise if commissioners so choose.
