The Kentwood City Commission on June 3 approved the purchase of a toddler play structure and related expenses for Homeacres Park and accepted a major volunteer build partnership with Amway.
Parks staff requested authorization to buy a youth/toddler play structure from Sinclair Recreation for $40,000, plus a $10,000 allowance for related expenses, with funds coming from the parks and recreation capital fund. Val, speaking for parks, said Amway will provide volunteers and contribute substantially to the overall playground project: "On August 7, they'll bring a 100 volunteers from Amway, to build this playground. And on August 6, they'll bring 30 volunteers to prep the space and get the playground equipment ready." Val told commissioners Amway will contribute $100,000 toward the overall playground that will cover about 75% of the primary equipment; Kentwood's requested purchase will add a toddler play area for younger families.
Commissioners asked whether the installation would expand the park footprint; parks staff said the work will largely stay within the existing footprint though swings and safety zones may slightly increase the area used. The commission approved the purchase and related expenses by voice vote and thanked parks staff for securing donors and volunteers.
The authorization directs staff to proceed with purchasing the specified toddler play structure using parks capital funds and to coordinate the Amway volunteer build in early August.
