Jacob Salcedo, a University of Arizona Cooperative Extension educator with the AZ Health Zone SNAP‑Ed team, described the Curious Quails Youth Nature program on KWCD. The program marked its first anniversary in July and delivers free, family‑friendly nature events across Cochise County.
Salcedo said events feature activity stations, community walks, sensory and craft stations and partner booths from local organizations. “When they show up, first we will greet them at our sign in table … they get to spend probably about 30, 40 minutes just walking around, checking out all the tables, all of the activity stations,” he said.
The next event is scheduled at the Palominas Multi‑Use Trail behind Palominas Elementary School from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. a week from the broadcast. Salcedo also said there will be a September event at the William’s House in Douglas and asked community groups interested in taking over the program to contact the extension via social media or his email, jakes7@arizona.edu.
Salcedo encouraged families to join but noted the walk is optional and some activities are loosely structured to suit young children’s interests. The extension said it lost AZ Health Zone SNAP‑Ed funding for the program and seeks partners to continue offering events.
