The Logansport Board of Public Works and Safety on July 30 ordered property cleanups at multiple addresses and approved conditional waivers for two appealed fines, board members said.
The board voted to order cleanup actions for properties including 1030 Twentieth Street, 321 Twelfth Street, 319 West Linden Avenue, 1331 High Street and to impose a $250 fine for multiple violations at 724 North Street. The board also accepted appeals for 1617 Smead Street and 831 High Street and agreed to waive fines in those two cases provided there are no new violations at each property within six months.
The actions follow code enforcement staff reports that many properties had repeated trash, debris and mowing issues. Randy, who presented the weekly code enforcement report, said crews had sent 25 notices for trash in the prior week, cleared 35 properties, and had 64 properties pending. Randy also reported two new citations, one property cleanup completed by staff, two towed vehicles and multiple notices related to grass and weeds.
At the hearing for 1617 Smead Street, a resident and a translator said cleanup work was underway and the property had a dumpster on site; Randy recommended waiving a $500 fine if no further violations occur in six months. The board approved that conditional waiver unanimously. At 831 High Street, resident Juan Cervantes described problems with container placement and collection by the hauler; the board approved a conditional waiver there as well, noting it was the property’s third violation but that cleanup had been completed.
For 724 North Street the board described a mattress sitting in public view for roughly six weeks and voted to impose a $250 fine for multiple violations after staff recommended a final notice and cleanup order. Separate cleanup orders were approved for 1030 Twentieth, 321 Twelfth, 319 West Linden and 1331 High Street; staff said these cases began in mid-June and involve trash, debris, excess wood, and mowing or fence issues.
Board members directed staff to monitor the condition of appealed properties for six months and noted that repeated violations may bring reinstated fines and further penalties under the city’s enforcement procedures.
Board votes on these items were recorded as yes from Deputy Mayor Jacob Palmasol and Board Member Levi Jones; Chris Martin was recorded absent for roll call earlier in the meeting.
The board’s code enforcement agenda items occupied a substantial portion of the meeting; staff said they would continue outreach to property owners, coordinate cleanups and pursue fines when properties do not comply.
