Commission proclaims Aug. 7 as Friends of Wilderness Day

Routt County commissioners adopted Resolution No. 2025059 on July 22 proclaiming August 7, 2025 as Friends of Wilderness Day to honor the volunteer group’s 25‑year partnership with the U.S. Forest Service. The resolution recognizes the organization’s activities — trail maintenance, visitor education, campsite monitoring and invasive‑weed removal — and honors founder Elaine Dermody. Friends of Wilderness representatives described their work as volunteer‑run and emphasized their role as wilderness ambassadors cooperating with the Forest Service. Commissioners noted the organization’s contributions to public lands stewardship and said staff would prepare a signed proclamation on paper for presentation at the group’s 25th‑anniversary event.
