Mendon official asks Rutland to discuss duplicate Heather Lane name after 911 confusion

Smith said the two communities share a ZIP code, which contributes to routing problems. She asked the boards to consider coordinating on a solution and said she would follow up with town staff. Late in the meeting the chair also noted that an ambulance had once gone to the wrong Heather Lane, underscoring the potential public-safety risk.
The Select Board did not take immediate formal action; at the meeting's close the chair suggested staff draft a letter explaining the situation to Heather Lane residents and to ask residents to propose alternative names. The board said it would not unilaterally rename a road without further discussion and that the towns should first confirm which municipality named the road originally and whether a renaming would require additional approvals.
