The Cedar City Council on July 30 voted to table consideration of an ordinance to rename Old Highway 91 after an extended discussion about marketing, emergency-response clarity and fairness to existing businesses.
The council reviewed suggestions from the Middleton family and others, including Main Street, Cedar Trails Boulevard, Cedar Boulevard (with a south prefix for addresses) and other variants. Councilmembers and staff raised concerns about address confusion with the existing North Cedar Boulevard, possible dispatch and emergency-response issues, and whether changing the name would create an advantage or cost burden for local businesses.
Some councilmembers said a commercial-sounding name such as Main Street or Cedar City Boulevard might help market the area and attract businesses; others said such branding could unfairly advantage new developments over existing hotels, restaurants and retailers that had already invested in infrastructure. The council asked staff to check with the police and fire dispatch about any safety or routing concerns and to consult business owners who would be affected by the change.
After discussion the council voted to table the ordinance and directed staff to return with additional information at a future meeting; the motion to table passed with a unanimous voice vote. Council members indicated one likely preferred option to explore further would be Cedar Boulevard (as a South Cedar Boulevard address series), but they asked staff to validate emergency-dispatch impacts and business-owner views before a final vote.
No ordinance was adopted and the street name remained Old Highway 91 pending follow-up.
