Members of the Cabot Cruisers presented a $15,000 donation to Cabot School District on Tuesday and announced two scholarships awarded this year to senior athletes Mason McFall and Abigail Huff.
"All of these funds go back to the Cabot kids in our community and we're really, really proud of that," said a Cruisers representative during the presentation describing funds raised through the group's Spring Fling 5K. The group said proceeds support physical education programs, community track nights and scholarships.
The meeting also featured extended recognitions for Superintendent Dr. Tony Thurman. Local elected officials, rotary and Kiwanis leaders presented citations and awards honoring Thurman’s more than 35 years in education and his 18 years as superintendent. Several speakers noted Thurman’s community leadership and partnerships that have supported district programs.
Thurman addressed the board and community and described his decision to step away. "I want to leave when it's really good and you feel good about what's going on. And that's what I'm doing. I feel at peace with that decision," he said. He said what he will miss most are the relationships with staff and students. "I may not be here in person, but I'll always be here in spirit," Thurman added.
The board and community gave Thurman recognition and awards on the record at the meeting. The board also took routine business actions later in the agenda.
