Grand County waives $1 e-recording surcharge on death certificates starting July 1

The county clerk reported that while the state made the underlying death certificate recording fee free, the electronic recording board left its $2 surcharge policy unchanged and placed discretion with counties to assess a $1 local surcharge. The clerk's report showed the county processed 94 death certificates in 2024 and 47 year-to-date by June 6, and staff recommended waiving the $1 surcharge, saying the fee collection cost outweighed any revenue.
A commissioner moved to waive the fee as presented with the effective date set to July 1. The motion carried by voice vote with all commissioners present responding "Aye." The board noted they will formalize the change in a resolution later, since rate changes require a formal resolution.
The clerk said the county would proceed with the administrative steps to implement the waiver and include the effective date in follow-up documents to be signed by the chair or stamped outside the meeting.
