Commissioners authorize submission of Safe Streets for All planning and demonstration grant

On June 10 Grand County commissioners voted to authorize the chair to sign an application and any related documents to submit a Safe Streets for All planning and demonstration grant.
Deputy Chief Ben Clark of Grand County EMS told the board the federal grant would fund development of a comprehensive safety action plan using a Safe Systems approach for county roadways. Clark noted the grant materials asked for a five‑year review of highway fatalities; when asked about the review period he said the grant asked staff to look at 2018 through 2022.
Clark emphasized the local impact of the data while encouraging the board to approve the application: "If you were to take everybody in this room and add 2 people, that would be the number of people that have died, on highways in Grand County, in the time frame that they asked us to to look at," he said during the presentation.
Commissioners moved and approved a motion to allow submission of the grant application and to authorize the chair to sign all applicable documents for the Safe Streets for All program before the June 26 deadline.
The planning grant, if awarded, would fund a data‑driven action plan to identify roadway safety interventions across Grand County; Clark said further board action would be requested if additional project matching or implementation funds were required.
