Sunbury City Council voted to award a contract to install a six-foot fence around the police department, approving Straubers Brothers Fencing as the vendor after discussion about bids, donor funding and where reimbursed money is recorded in the budget.
Council members heard competing written quotes: Stoppers at $15,980 and Buffalo Valley at $17,650, according to materials presented at the meeting. Council approved awarding the work to Straubers Brothers Fencing; the council member making the motion later stated the contract amount as $15,009.80 when the motion was read aloud.
Council and staff debated which budget line would cover the cost. Treasurer Martina confirmed that money tied to last year’s purchase order — including a recent reimbursement for previously purchased vests — had been returned to the city and available in municipal accounts, but at least one council member pressed for certainty about whether the reimbursement had been posted to the correct line item.
Council also noted an outside donation: the meeting record shows a $5,000 donation from “Vinny Closet” toward fencing. Several council members cautioned that line-item accounting must be correct before final payment is issued.
The chief described operational reasons for the fence, including preventing vehicles from leaving the lot and securing department vehicles and equipment. After debate, council members voted in favor of the award; the council recorded yes votes from Savage, Koscius and Barnhart and additional affirmations from other members during roll call.
The contract award will proceed while staff finalizes the exact accounting transfer to cover the expenditure and prepares a resolution to move funds between line items, which council earlier approved as a resolution to be ratified at the next meeting.
