South Dakota DOT-backed Old Highway 77 trail work to start after Memorial Day; 21 trees marked for removal

Lance Mayer of DGR Engineering said contractor T & M Concrete will start staking and tree removals. The team marked 21 trees for removal; staff noted 12 of those trees are river-type specimens with multiple trunks/large branches. Lance said the contractor will work from the shoulder on Old Highway 77 and maintain access by leaving half the roadway open where needed so residents retain driveway access. He said the project came in under staff’s estimate and is roughly 80% grant-funded.
Why it matters: The trail will create a shared-use path between Fourth and Fifteenth streets (as described in the meeting) and involves coordination with property owners and the South Dakota Department of Transportation (DOT). Staff said DOT will handle some observation duties; city staff and the engineering firm will remain available for staking questions and coordination.
