The Referrals Committee on July 28 referred a request to extend allowable vending dates for lakefront vendors to the Administration & Public Works Committee (A&PW) with the recommendation it be heard at A&PW’s August meeting so the City Council could consider action before Sept. 1. Sponsors expressed urgency to modify a specific section of code prior to Sept. 1; the committee agreed to send the narrower request to A&PW for quick consideration. “I would recommend that we send this to A and PW and ask them to do it at their next meeting,” one member said. Council member Newsom moved the referral and Mayor Biss seconded; the chair declared the ayes have it. Corporation Counsel also said staff has received a request to review the entire vending-code section; committee members said they preferred acting on the specific, finite request first and to open a separate referral for a broader code review. No ordinance or rule suspension was adopted at the Referrals Committee level; A&PW will determine whether to recommend expedited council action that could include rule suspension at the council meeting.
