Sunbury — City administrative staff told council on July 30 that the city’s aggregated electric rate (9.25¢ per kilowatt‑hour) remains below the current AEP tariff (just over 10.5¢/kWh), though both rates rose compared with the prior year.
Staff said AEP had provided a customer document with ways to reduce energy costs and warned of the possibility of rolling blackouts when air‑conditioning demand peaks. Council members asked about recent power “glitches”; staff said Kroger experienced an outage tied to its backup generator and that Chief Kovach had provided input; staff reported the generator issue appears resolved.
Council and staff also discussed recent brief outages in parts of town and noted that the city has installed “smart breakers” (fault‑isolating equipment) on new poles near Tim Hortons and on Cheshire Road to improve resiliency. Staff said they will follow up with the city’s AEP liaison for more information on the sequence and causes of the glitches.
No ordinances or formal council actions were tied to the utility discussion at the meeting; staff plans to post related meeting recordings and documents online.
