Council accepts $12,000 state grant to fund Warm Zone rescue task force training

The Bedford Town Council voted 6-0 on May 21 to accept a $12,000 grant from the New Hampshire Department of Safety to cover overtime and backfill costs for an EMS Warm Zone rescue task force training.
Captain Tierney of the Bedford Fire Department described the program to the council as an active-shooter response training the state fire academy will deliver at no cost to the town; the NH funds will pay overtime and staffing backfill. “It will cover overtime and backfill costs,” Tierney told the council, and he said the class will include about 16 personnel from the fire/EMS side plus four law-enforcement personnel.
The training is scheduled to begin June 25 at the Peter Woodbury School, Tierney said. Councilor Michael Strand moved to accept the grant and authorize the town manager and fire chief to execute any necessary documentation; a second was offered by Councilor O'Sull (as recorded). The vote was 6-0.
Officials told the council the grant carries no local tax impact. Town staff said accepting the funds will allow the department to train personnel to the “Warm Zone” concept without drawing additional funds from the operating budget.
The council-approved motion authorized acceptance of the grant and execution of documents necessary to complete the award.
