Commissioners authorize short-term hire for elections clerk and approve budget amendment

The Washington County Commissioners Court on Tuesday authorized hiring an elections clerk in advance of an anticipated employee departure to permit training and continuity and approved a related budget amendment to cover the overlap.
Elections Administrator Miss Jackson told commissioners she sought advance hiring so the current employee could remain to train the replacement and ensure continuity before the next election. Commissioners discussed and approved hiring the clerk for one month to allow training and transition.
County Auditor Miss Hollis presented a proposed budget amendment to move money from salary contingency into the Elections and Voter Registration Office budget to fund the temporary overlap. Hollis said the originally proposed transfer of $4,700 will be less because the overlap time was reduced. Hollis also noted recent overtime from the prior election contributed to the need for the amendment. The court voted to approve the budget amendment.
The action was presented as a short-term, one-month authorization to ensure the office can train a replacement and maintain election operations. Miss Jackson and Hollis said staff will monitor the actual cost and that the amendment covers the expected overlap and overtime adjustments.
