The applicant asked to use more permanent materials that match the contemporary architecture of the home; the designer said the proposed carport would be constructed of aluminum and concrete and set back roughly 13 feet 6 inches from the property line.
Designer Joshua Robbins (presenting on behalf of his grandmother, the homeowner) said the home’s existing garage holds only one car and the family requested a covered, visually compatible second parking space. "We wanted to design a carport which matched the tropical modern architecture of the main residence," Robbins said in the presentation. Planning staff recommended approval, noting the proposed setback provides significant clearance and staff did not anticipate right‑of‑way work that would require rapid removal.
Board members who visited the site praised the house and said the custom carport better fits the architecture than a canvas model. No public opposition was recorded at the hearing.
Motion and vote: Mister Davis moved to approve the variance as presented; Mister Krennick seconded. The board voted in favor and approved the request, subject to the conditions in the staff draft order.
The approval allows the owner to construct the carport of materials other than canvas and pipe, consistent with the house design, with the conditions specified by planning staff.
