HDC staff reports enforcement notices and property inspections for unpermitted signs

Staff reported recent notices, return receipts and inspections for several properties with unpermitted signage and said citations will follow where compliance was not achieved.
HDC staff member Nikki Sheriff updated the committee on enforcement activity during the July 29 meeting. Sheriff said she had mailed notices and received return receipts for a property on Salem Street associated with Jay McLaughlin; she planned property inspections that day to confirm removal. She also reported additional notices sent to a property referred to as the Compass Building (7 Easy Street) after temporary signage was relocated to the building façade and railing; Sheriff said the initial notice required removal and that staff would issue a citation if noncompliance continued.
Sheriff also said that she would follow up on other locations previously discussed, that she had observed some signs removed after notices were sent, and that she would continue to document compliance status. Commissioners praised the staff’s operational work and asked staff to include updates in future meetings. No new citations were disclosed during the meeting; staff said citations would be the next step if property owners did not bring their signage into compliance after notices and inspections.
The committee encouraged applicants and property owners to submit applications before installing signs and reminded businesses to avoid unpermitted temporary signage.
