The Community Foundation of Nantucket returned to the HTC Sign Advisory Committee on July 29 seeking approval for a gable‑end sign on a building that houses offices on the first floor and residences above. The applicant provided renderings and examples of similar gable signs on nearby buildings.
Committee members noted the design examples and stressed the HDC preference that signage be located at the elevation actually occupied by the business. Commissioners expressed concern that placing a sign high on the gable when the offices occupy the first floor could mislead pedestrians into thinking the business occupies upper floors. The committee recommended placing the sign centered below the triple windows and approximately centered between the top of the fascia and the bottom of the window sill, or otherwise at a first‑floor level closer to the front entrance. The applicant provided a revised exhibit during the meeting and agreed to submit it to staff.
A motion to approve the sign with the placement condition passed by roll call. Staff will receive the exhibit and confirm final placement and dimensions consistent with the committee’s direction before the sign is fabricated or installed.
