Sign advisory committee approves projecting sign at 1 Cambridge with clearance and removal conditions

Marissa Collections, an occupant of the multi‑entry building at 1 Cambridge Street and 0 India, brought an application for projecting signs at both entrances. The committee discussed the two related applications during the July 29 meeting but noted only the Cambridge‑Street application was on the agenda and voteable.

Members raised two main issues: head‑height clearance for the projecting sign and the applicant’s temporary signs that were in place without approval. Commissioners required the projecting sign to meet the committee’s 7 foot 6 inch (7'6") minimum clearance from the sidewalk to the underside of the sign and asked that any unpermitted flags or temporary window signs be removed. The committee preferred the white background with pink lettering option. The committee moved and seconded a motion to approve the Cambridge Street projecting sign with the clearance condition, the white background/pink lettering preference and a requirement that unapproved signage be removed; the motion passed by roll call with committee members recorded as voting in the affirmative.

Because the 0 India application was not on the agenda for this meeting, staff agreed to add that application to a future agenda and advised the applicant to submit any revisions. The committee noted that contractor‑installed brackets or wiring seen in photographs might require adjustment to meet the clearance requirement.

The committee also emphasized that temporary flags and other signage currently on the building must be removed or submitted for approval; staff confirmed it had sent notices in other cases and would follow up on this property.
