Selection committee tentatively names four Hall of Fame inductees, holds one nominee for next year

Miami Lakes — The Miami League Sports Hall of Fame selection committee tentatively approved four inductees and placed one nominee on hold during a July 29 selection meeting. The committee voted to advance Rivers Denbigh, Don Bailey Jr., Joe Weber and Karina Sid as its top four picks. Committee members said the list is tentative until the nominating period closes and council signs off. The committee moved Coach Robert (Rob) Mirovitz to next-year consideration after voting on the ballot results. The committee’s discussion centered on balancing athlete and administrator nominations and confirming nominees’ availability before finalizing inductees. Committee members noted they prefer to name four to five inductees but agreed four was appropriate given current responses and ranking results. Why this matters: The Hall of Fame induction is an annual community honor that recognizes local athletes, coaches and organizers. Tentative selections move next to the town council for formal placement on an upcoming council agenda and then to letters and public notices once council approval is secured. Members discussed nominees’ records, community involvement and, for older nominees, the committee’s preference to complete inductions while nominees or their families are available. The committee used a ranked ballot (1–5, where 1 is top choice) to average results across members. On average, Rivers Denbigh and Don Bailey Jr. tied for the top average score (1.6), Joe Weber averaged 2.8, Karina Sid averaged 3.2 and Rob Mirovitz did not receive sufficient support to place among the top four in the final tabulation. Based on that outcome, committee members voted to take the top four from the ballot. The motion to induct the four top-ranked nominees was made by a committee member and seconded; the committee recorded the motion as carried by a 4–1 tally. Committee members instructed staff to prepare nomination letters for council submission and said they would update the list if any additional nominations arrived before the stated deadline. Next steps: The committee chair said staff will prepare letters for the four tentatively selected nominees and present the nomination package to the town clerk for placement on the council agenda; the committee identified the council meeting of Aug. 19 as the target for presentation.
