Volunteer tutor urges board to expand teacher training, after-school transport and vocabulary supports

Carol Robinson, who described herself as a longtime volunteer math tutor, urged the board to invest in teacher training on the use of manipulatives, to expand vocabulary-building efforts in early grades, and to provide transportation so more students can participate in after-school enrichment programs.
Robinson said she tutored at several district schools and that programs such as math club and chess club had low participation because families lacked transportation home after activities. "The only kids that can participate in those programs ... have to have a means to get home," she said, noting the math club she helped had roughly 60 eligible students but only about 10 participating.
Robinson also suggested partnering with local colleges to create virtual volunteers and supported continued use of manipulatives and training so teachers can use them effectively in early grades. Those suggestions were offered during public comment; the board did not take immediate action on the recommendations at the July 29 meeting.
